KJELDAHL, DUMAS AND OTHER DIGESTORS

Thanks to its high precision and universality, the Kjeldahl method is the industry standard method for measuring the nitrogen content in food, animal feed, soil and water samples. The Kjedahl method is flexible and of universal application; it always gives reliable results, even with heterogeneous samples. The analytical process involves four steps: sample digestion in sulfuric acid, steam distillation of the digested solution, titration of the distillate and calculation of the result. Depending on the type and number of samples, various digestion and distillation systems are available with their corresponding accessories. The nitrogen and protein content of solid and liquid samples can also be determined using the Dumas combustion method. This is a quick and convenient alternative to the classic Kjeldahl method for almost any type of matrix. There are also other specific digestion systems for determining the chemical oxygen demand (COD) or the acid-soluble proportion of metals in wastewater sludges, sediments and aqua regia soils.
