ROTARY EVAPORATORS

Rotary evaporators are instruments especially designed to evaporate solvents from samples under vacuum. They consist of a heating bath with a rotating flask, so the liquid within is dispersed as a thin film across the heated sides of the flask, accelerating the evaporation of the solvent. The evaporation rate is regulated by the temperature of the heating bath, the size of the flask, the distillation pressure and the speed of rotation. The rotation ensures the sample is mixed homogeneously and prevents overheating, while the vacuum helps lower the boiling point and therefore increases the efficiency of the distillation process. Rotary evaporators are used to distil solvents, dry powders, concentrate solutions and suspensions and induce crystallisation. Different models have different features, such as built-in vacuum control, manual or motorized lift, automatic boiling point detection or measurement, and the type of glass configuration. See More
